Backsplashes

Kitchen Backsplash Tile in Port Dover & Norfolk County

We tile backsplashes in kitchens, laundry rooms and wet bars, and behind bathroom vanities, in subway, mosaic, glass, stone and patterned tile, with design guidance from the layout to the finished install. Styles of Tiles is a tile setter based in Port Dover, and every photo on this page is from one of our own jobs.

What a Backsplash Job Includes

Here is the backsplash work we do, in plain trade terms. One job can include any mix of it.

Kitchen BacksplashesTile from the countertop up to the cabinets, behind the range and the sink and around the window, cut in at every outlet and switch.
Subway, Herringbone & Patterned TileSubway tile laid offset, stacked or in a herringbone, and hexagon, arabesque, penny-round and bold patterned tile.
Glass, Marble & Stone MosaicGlass mosaic, marble mosaic and stacked stone, set so the pattern carries through from one sheet to the next.
Full-Height Tile Behind the RangeTile carried up past the cabinets to the range hood, or right to the ceiling, for a feature wall behind the stove.
Laundry Rooms, Wet Bars & VanitiesThe same work on a smaller wall: behind a laundry sink, a wet bar or a bathroom vanity.
Layout & EdgesDesign guidance before the first tile goes up: where the pattern starts, where the cuts land, and how the tile meets the cabinets and the window. Open edges, like the end of a run, get a Schluter trim profile in plastic, metal or a rounded shape, whichever suits the look. Around a window we leave the trim out: the tile is cut in tight and finished with grout and silicone, which looks cleaner.

Where Our Part of a Backsplash Starts and Stops

Styles of Tiles does tile installation in Port Dover and Simcoe. We are a tile setter, not a general contractor. This is where our part of a backsplash starts and stops, so you know who to call for what.

What we do

Once the countertop is in, we take it from there: the layout, the tile, the cuts around outlets, switches and windows, the grout and the finished edges. When the old backsplash has to come off or the drywall behind it needs patching, that is included too. You pick out and supply the backsplash tile, and we supply everything else for our part of the job.

What someone else does

We don't do plumbing. The outlets and switches we almost always handle ourselves: usually all it takes is a longer screw to bring the outlet out flush with the new tile. An electrician is only needed if there is an actual problem. Countertops and cabinets belong to your kitchen company, and they go in before the backsplash does.

Common Questions

How long does a backsplash take?

It goes in stages: the tile first, then the grout once the tile has set. A typical kitchen backsplash takes 2 to 3 days. The size of the wall, the tile and the pattern can change that, so ask when you call for your quote and we'll tell you what to expect for your job.

Do you supply the tile?

No. You pick out and supply the backsplash tile, and we supply everything else for our part of the job. If you need us to, we can pick the tile up for you, and if you need something different we can work it out case by case. Tell us the tile you are looking at and we'll tell you how it will lay out on your wall.

Does the countertop have to be in first?

Yes. The backsplash sits on top of the countertop, so the cabinets and the countertop go in first and the tile goes on after. We can start right after the countertops go in. There is no wait.

Can you take off my old backsplash?

Yes. When the old backsplash has to come off, we take it off, and when the drywall behind it needs patching, we patch it. Both are included in the job when they are needed. Tell us what is on the wall now when you ask for a quote, and send a photo of it.

Is a backsplash too small a job?

No. We are happy to do a backsplash on its own, with no other tile work. Send us a photo and the rough length of the counter and we'll give you a quote.

What should I send you for a quote?

Photos of the wall and the rough length of the countertop are the best start. Tell us the tile you are looking at, whether the countertop is already in, and what is on the wall now. That is usually enough for us to tell you what the job involves.
