What We Do

What a Tiled Shower Job Includes

Here is the shower work we do, in plain trade terms. One job can include any mix of it.

Shower Walls & SurroundsLarge-format porcelain, marble-look, slate-look, subway and mosaic tile, including feature walls and accent bands.

Shower Floors, Linear Drains & Low-Step EntriesTiled shower floors in hexagon, pebble or square mosaic, or large tile cut to slope, to a centre drain or a Schluter linear drain. Or a low-step entry: about a two-inch step, with the sill sitting right on the shower tray.

Niches, Benches & CurbsRecessed niches, single or stacked, tiled benches and half-walls, and curbs finished in the same tile as the walls.

Tub Surrounds & Tub-to-Shower TileTiled tub surrounds with niches and accent bands, and the tile work when the tub comes out and a shower goes in.

Schluter Kerdi WaterproofingA Schluter KERDI membrane behind the tile on every shower, sealed at the seams, corners and pipes, so water stops before it reaches your walls.

We Tile What Your Plumber Roughed In

Styles of Tiles is a tile setter, not a general contractor. This is where our part of a shower starts and stops, so you know who to call for what.

What we do

Once your plumber has the valve and drain roughed in, we take it from there: the waterproofing, the slope on the shower floor, the tile on the walls and floor, the niches, bench and curb, the grout and the trim edges. If you want a linear drain or a low-step entry, we lay the floor out to suit it. You pick out and supply the shower tile, and we supply everything else for our part of the job.

What someone else does

We don't do plumbing, glass doors or panels, drywall or demolition. Those belong to your plumber, a glass company and your contractor. For a true curbless shower, the floor has to be lowered first: that is structural work, lowering beams or chipping out concrete, and it is a contractor's job. Once the floor is down, we tile it. The glass is measured and installed after the tile is finished, so book it once the tile is in. If you need a plumber, we can recommend a local one.

Common Questions

How long does a tiled shower take?

A standard walk-in tiled shower takes about five working days. It goes in stages: waterproofing, then wall and floor tile, then grout, and each stage needs time to set before the next one starts. The size of the shower, the tile and the floor can change that, so ask when you call for your quote and we'll tell you what to expect for your job.

Do you supply the tile?

No. You pick out and supply the shower tile, and we supply everything else. If you need us to, we can pick the tile up for you, and if you need something different we can work it out case by case. Tell us the size and look you want and we'll tell you whether it suits a shower. Some tile is too slippery for a shower floor, and large-format wall tile needs flat walls behind it.

Do you do the plumbing?

No. The valve, shower head and drain rough-in are your plumber's job, and the glass goes to a glass company. If you don't have a plumber, we can recommend a local one. We tile to what they install, and we can tell you what needs to be in place before we start, so nobody is waiting on anybody.

Do you do curbless showers?

We tile curbless showers once a contractor has lowered the floor. A true curbless shower, with no step at all, needs structural work first: lowering the beams or chipping out the concrete. That part is a contractor's job, not ours. On our own, without a contractor, we can go as low as a low-step entry: we set the shower pan with about a two-inch step, and the sill sits right on the tray.

What should I send you for a quote?

Photos of the space and rough measurements are the best start. Tell us the tile you are looking at, whether the plumbing is being moved, and whether the old shower or tub is already out. That is usually enough for us to tell you what the job involves.

How do you waterproof a tiled shower?

Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own, so the waterproofing goes behind them. We use the Schluter system: KERDI membrane on the walls and a Schluter shower floor and drain, with the seams and corners sealed before any tile goes on. It is Schluter on every shower we build, no exceptions.
