We lay tile floors in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, mudrooms and hallways, and on stairs, in porcelain and ceramic tile, with heat under the tile if you want it. Styles of Tiles is a tile setter based in Port Dover, and every photo on this page is from one of our own jobs.
Here is the floor work we do, in plain trade terms. One job can include any mix of it.
Styles of Tiles is a tile setter, not a general contractor. This is where our part of a tile floor starts and stops, so you know who to call for what.
We get the floor ready for tile, plan the layout before the first tile goes down, then set the tile, grout it and finish the edges with Schluter trim. We pull the toilet and reset it, and we do the baseboards and trim, all as part of the job. When the old floor has to come out or the subfloor needs levelling, that is included too. For a heated floor, the heating cable goes in before the tile. You pick out and supply the floor tile, and we supply everything else for our part of the job.
We don't do plumbing beyond pulling and resetting the toilet. For a heated floor, we install the heating mat, and your own electrician does the final electrical hookup to the thermostat. If the floor under the tile needs structural repair, like sagging joists, that is a contractor's job, and it has to be done before we start.
Tile floors from our own jobs: a kitchen, bathrooms, entries, hallways, stairs and a heated floor going in. Click any photo to see it full size. There are more in our floors gallery.
From Port Dover we travel to tile and flooring jobs in Simcoe, Delhi, Waterford, Port Rowan, Jarvis, Turkey Point, Hagersville, Caledonia and the towns in between.
It goes in stages: getting the floor ready, then the tile, then the grout, and each stage needs time to set before the next one starts. On average a tile floor takes 3 to 5 days. The size of the room, the tile and the floor underneath can change that, so ask when you call for your quote and we'll tell you what to expect for your job.
No. You pick out and supply the floor tile, and we supply everything else for our part of the job. If you need us to, we can pick the tile up for you, and if you need something different we can work it out case by case. Tell us the size and look you want and we'll tell you whether it suits the room. Large-format tile needs a flat floor under it, and some polished tile is slippery when wet.
Yes. We install Schluter DITRA-HEAT, the orange membrane in the heated-floor photo on this page. It ties in with the DITRA membrane that goes under every floor we tile. We put in the heating mat, and your own electrician does the final hookup to the thermostat. The heating goes down before the tile, so it has to be planned before the floor is laid, not added afterwards. Tell us when you ask for your quote if you want it.
No. When the old floor has to come out, we take it out, and when the subfloor needs levelling, we level it. Both are included in the job when they are needed, not quoted as a separate line. Tell us what is on the floor now when you ask for a quote. Tile needs a solid, flat floor under it, and what is there now decides how much work that takes.
Photos of the room and rough measurements are the best start. Tell us the tile you are looking at, what is on the floor now, and whether you want heat under it. That is usually enough for us to tell you what the job involves.
Tile for bathrooms, entryways and mudrooms, where water and grit come in. In a kitchen or laundry room either one works. We install both, so we can tell you which suits the room. Our vinyl plank vs tile article goes through it room by room.
