We tile fireplace surrounds, floor-to-ceiling fireplace walls and hearths in porcelain, marble-look, mosaic and stacked stone, around gas, electric and wood-burning fireplaces. We also put tile where most people don't think to put it: bar fronts, countertops, feature walls and outdoor surfaces. Styles of Tiles is a tile setter based in Port Dover, and every photo on this page is from one of our own jobs.
Here is the fireplace and specialty tile work we do, in plain terms. If you have a spot in mind and wonder whether it can be tiled, ask us.
This is where our part of a fireplace or custom tile job starts and stops, so you know what to expect and who to call for what.
We tile what is already there: the wall, the surround and the hearth as they are built. We plan the layout so it is centred on the firebox and the cuts are even on both sides, then set the tile, wrap the corners and finish the exposed edges cleanly. We follow the clearance rules the fireplace maker gives for the area around the opening. We cover the floor and the fireplace before we start, and we clean up when we finish.
We don't install or hook up the fireplace itself. The unit, the gas line and the venting belong to a licensed fireplace installer or gas fitter, and they should be in and tested before we tile. A wall that is rated for the heat of your fireplace is the responsibility of the fireplace installer or the homeowner, and it has to be in place before we start: we don't heat-rate the wall. We don't build framing, TV recesses or mantels, and we don't do electrical work or plumbing.
Fireplaces and custom tile from our own jobs: stacked stone, brick-look, marble-look, wood-look and mosaic tile, plus a tiled bar and a tiled countertop. Click any photo to see it full size.
From Port Dover we travel to tile and flooring jobs in Simcoe, Delhi, Waterford, Port Rowan, Jarvis, Turkey Point, Hagersville, Caledonia and the towns in between.
Typically you supply the stone and the tile, and it doesn't matter where you buy them. If it is at a local store, we can pick it up for you when that is convenient. Not sure what to buy? Show us a picture of a look you like and we'll help you find a tile that gets you there.
Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and stacked stone are the usual choices around a fireplace. Large-format tile gives a clean wall with few grout lines, stacked stone gives texture, and mosaic suits a smaller surround inside a mantel. We tile around gas, electric and wood-burning fireplaces, and we follow the clearance rules for yours.
Yes. We tile the whole wall from the floor to the ceiling, above and around the firebox. We tile the wall as it is built: we don't frame TV recesses or put up mantels. If a TV is going on that wall, plan the mount and the wiring before the tile goes up, so nothing has to be cut into finished tile later.
A fireplace tile job typically takes 2 to 3 days. Ask when you call for your quote and we'll tell you what to expect for your fireplace.
Yes. We have no minimum job size. A bar front, a countertop, one feature wall, an outdoor surface: tile in a place people don't usually tile is the kind of job we like. For the wall behind the counter see our kitchen backsplash page, and for floors see our tile floor page.
Photos of the fireplace or the wall and rough measurements (width and height) are the best start. Tell us whether the fireplace is gas, electric or wood-burning, whether you have picked your tile or stone yet, and the look you are after. A picture of a fireplace you like helps a lot. That is usually enough for us to tell you what the job involves.
